The Evolution of Olympic Ski Jumping In the year 1808, Norwegian military officer Olaf Rye performed the first-ever ski jump, jumping 9.5 meters off of a small hill. Since that day, ski jumping has evolved and become a much bigger sport. Known as the “father of modern ski jumping,” Sondre Norheim, another Norwegian, was the victor of the very first ski jumping competition. In the 1950s Andreas Daeschner, a Swiss jumper, was the first participant to develop a technique in which the jumper holds their arms close to their body and uses an extreme forward lean. This technique was then improved in 1985 when Swedish jumper Jan Bokloev spread the tips of his skis into a V. By 1992 this technique was the standard for Olympic ski jumping. Ski jumping first became an Olympic sport in 1924; it debuted in the Chamonix, France Winter Olympics. When the sport first began, men’s large hill was the only event. Forty years later, in 1964, the competition was split into two events: large-hill jumping
