Contender for my favorite song of all time and in my opinion the most beautiful song ever created. Itās hard to listen to this without tearing up. There is a sort of mysticism to this song and the entire astral weeks album that canāt really be found in music elsewhere, with its swelling strings and pure lyrical perfection. Iām willing to make a bold claim here: No album before or after Astral Weeks has matched it lyrically. Yep you heard that right, this has what I consider to be the most deeply human and poetic words EVER put to music. Listen to those opening lines āif I stepped into the slipstream, between the viaducts of my dreamsā and itās like youāre entering a world that Van Morrison has counjured out of the human language and the beauty of his own voice. Everything about this is spiritual in a way that no other music is for me, and the ending of the song with the repeated phrase āto be born againā is almost overwhelming in emotional intensity. Put this on and be taken away.

Iāve been obsessed with this song recently and Iām gonna list off a few reasons why I think itās one of the best songs ever written: 1. The strings and stark guitar as the only instruments give this song such a dark and isolating feel, it truly sounds sinister and breaten. 2. Those opening lines. āI stepped into an avalanche, it covered up my soul.ā Now if THAT doesnāt immediately grab your attention and pull you into the song I donāt know what will. 3. The imagery here is in a category all itās own. Itās very rare Iāve heard a song be this detailed in its writing, with such a venomous and self deprecating tone. When Cohen sings āI myself am the pedastool for this ugly hump at which you stareā it gives me goosebumps. Overall the poetic darkness of this song will leave you speechless, and itās hard to believe itās 50 years old at this point. Give it a listen if you want your mind blown.š
