William Clark Green’s concept albums are always based on (imo) cool stories. Obviously this one was based on the Ringling Bros. Circus. But more specifically on a road (and lake) in Texas named after the fact that the circus would always stop there for the elephants, hence “water for the elephants” lyric. But circuses had a long history of abuse and substance abuse similar to today’s entertainment industry. Which is what WCG bases this song/album on. Btw for fans of American horror story some of the characters are based off of real people in the Ringling circus.
