my favourite nugget of history knowledge is that during the moroccan invasion of the songhay kingdom in 1591, the songhay army planned to send a stampede of 1,000 cattle to break down the moroccan front line. of course, the guns of the moroccans scared the cattle and sent them stampeding back to the songhay lines instead. i think that’s the most absurd battle tactics i’ve ever heard of and it makes me giggle every time i think of it.
