Last week a student of mine was racist towards me. It wasn’t like she blatantly said the n-word but it was clear her intention was to insult me and the insult was only applicable because I obviously am not white. I told her off, but 15 min later it happened again. With such a clear intention that i honestly didn’t know what to do. (The class was also very rowdy) Afterwards I really felt annoyed with myself that I didn’t respond in the way I wanted to. Something that used to happen ALOT when I encountered racism that isn’t very blatant. (I am a pro at calling racists out now, but because she is my student I was a little taken aback and at a loss for words) Today I pulled her aside to talk about it and before I could say anything she apologised and seemed very understanding of what I said. She is a really sweet and hard working kid, so it was so weird for her to say such things. But yea if I know one thing, children copy their parents.
