This amazing album (song?) was first released 50 years ago today. Got the German press of this album in high school (my first “nicer” pressing of an album) and it changed the way I looked at music. One album, one 40+ minute song that covers both sides of the disc. Incredible musicianship and various drawn-out compositions. It sounds serious and sophisticated, but in fact—upon examining the lyrics and the rest of the fuckin awesome elaborate satirical newspaper that the album is packaged in—you realize it’s all a farce. The words mean nothing but stupidity. It’s like if Da Vinci just painted the Mona Lisa as a joke or something, which makes TAAB that much more enjoyable. This album made me fall in love with prog rock. If it weren’t for that, I would have never become such a huge fan of Zappa, the Dead, and Phish. So thanks Ian and crew! 🧱
