Puma Blue delivers an alternative r&b album dunked into a tub of trip hop, with sensual and nocturnal vocals and melodies, which really reminded me of artists like Daniel Caesar, but then reveals that narcotic and drowsy sound you’d hear listening to that early 80s trip hop sound, with songs like ‘Hush’ sounding like it’s been taken directly from Portishead’s ‘DUMMY’. Whilst I am not familiar with the artist before this body of work, after some research and seeing he also produces poetry you can really see that reflected in the album, with messages being fed to the listener about love and longing for that someone, but then the darker twist of death and mortality. This record has quickly become one of my favourites of the year thus far, and I strongly recommend a listen, its range and world building entices you completely into the story he’s conveying.
