Shabaka maintains his typical spiritual ambience whilst introducing more electronic and fiery elements to his tone. The songs journey you along with serenading saxophones and wind chimes, but the underbelly of the album is this fierce and powerful fight, that develops throughout the songs, creating this much more complex world than we’ve got on previous Shabaka records. Songs like ‘Call The Power’ and ‘Dance In Praise’ give that feeling of resistance and revolution, they’re fast paced and almost alarming, it creates uncertainty within you, something is off within this scenic landscape we’ve been attuned to. I don’t think everything hit the mark, the more spoken word tracks in ‘Go Astray’ and ‘Eyes Lowered’ being the weaker tracks on the project, I think they serve their role in allowing Shabaka to convey his story but they just seem out of place and sporadic in the album overall. This is a great release, which further roots Shabaka’s place in the jazz world.
