I believe that this is one of Mitski’s most underrated songs and that everyone should listen to it, at least once. The intense guitar, the raw singing, with sighs and grunts of exhaustion, I believe, really capture the meaning behind it. Now of course, it is up to interpretation, whatever one listens to, but this song, truly captures the human consumption of capitalism. There’s so much that one wants to pursue, but only so little that they can. This song is about yearning, for more than what you have, but only being able to achieve so little. “Kill me in Jerusalem” refers, as we all know, to the crusification of Jesus Christ. To live and succeed in our capitalistic society, you need to be upright “perfect” (“I better ace that interview” “Until then I can try again”), and a religious opinion is that Jesus is, quote unquote, “perfect”. By wanting to be killed in Jerusalem, Mitski has had enough of trying to pull this superfical persona, and is pleading for it to come to an end.

This song is so beautifully composed. The ticking, and ringing of the clock as well as the bass adds up to the sadness and frustration that the singer(s) feels. The lyrics, are beyond mesmerizing, though almost simple. The part that stand out the most to me; “Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun” A fear I share, with a lot of people I know and strangers I’ve yet to meet, is time. Time is one’s greatest enemy, besides themselves. No matter how much or how little you’ve got of it, you never realize how much you’ve already spent. Time by Pink Floyd really puts together the words and thoughts of one’s mind, delivering it heavenly. If you haven’t, I utmost encourage you to check out the full song, being sure you wont regret it.
