39 years ago today, john carpenters horror film ‘Christine’ was released. it was based off of a book of the same name Stephen King. that’s where i first heard this song. after researching the artist, i found that he had a prominent career in the early 1950s, but died by accidental suicide. story has it that he was backstage with some friends and was playing which a gun, which wasn’t unusual. his girlfriend (?) told him to be careful, and johnny said “it’s not even loaded, see?”, put the gun to his head, and pulled the trigger. when he died he was only beginning to gain fame, and a prominent career most likely would have followed.

there’s just something about the morrison hotel cover that makes me sad and happy at the same time, but i can’t quite place my finger on it. maybe it’s because this photo was taken a little over a year before morrisons death? maybe it’s the lighting? who knows.

i was born in california. we lived in a very small town, and i remember going to a school a few days of the week. i don’t know if it was a home school or charter school or what, but i know it wasn’t everyday. as we would drive there, i remember listening to Guns N’ Roses, Prince, and Led Zeppelin. i was probably around 6 or 7. this song reminds me of those sunny drives through windy roads on mountainsides.

when i hear this song i think of long and restless summer nights in the 1920s and 30s however i didn’t live in those times so i can’t say it’s %100 accurate
