The Microphones, aka Phil Elverum, constructs a truly breathtaking body of work, it’s dense, ominous and unpredictable in its nature but also so concise, sentimental and thematic in how it composes itself. No track is left without meaning, every second, every guitar string, every distorted ambient sequence is placed and perfectly layered to shroud the listener into this world of isolation, fully immersing you into the insignificance of yourself among the vast and grand world that lives and breathes around you. The album plays among many different tones and genres, the different styles of folk is the pulse of the album, throbbing along with its jangly guitars and anxious melodies, but there’s this mix of ambience and avant garde textures, with at times also delving into these black metal like sounds, truly asserting the records volatile atmosphere and portraying the message of how fickle life is.
