Doing some wrapping up here. If you’ve never heard of this small collection of atolls, I wouldn’t blame you 🗺️❔ They are some of the most remote in the world, located about half-way between Tanzania and Indonesia.
As the name implies they are now owned by the British -bcuz why wouldn’t they want a remote island thousand of km away from anything- but this wasn’t always so. The native Chagos people who used to live here were all forcibly removed in the 60s to make way for military bases 🤦♂️ Nowadays tho the atols are disputed between Britain, the US, and Mauritius who all want them for different reasons.
Between them all though, are ppl like Charlesia: one of the last of the remaining Chagos peoples who just want to keep their traditions alive, even if they are no longer home 🌴🪘 #musicmap#worldmusic#indigenous

If you’re like me and have always been curious as to what the deal is with Western Sahara (ie: what is it and why it’s disputed ) basically Spain controlled it ‘till 1975 even tho Morroco lay claim to it since ‘57. When Spain gave it up neighboring Mauritiania got in a fight with Morroco over it but ultimately lost. Nowadays about 80% of the land is administered by Morroco, while the other 20% is ran by an Islamic gov called the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (which is why its always marked as disputed territory on maps).
So, even tho it’s very sparsely populated (it is the Sahara desert after all) it’s got a mix of Spanish, Sahrawi (native), Moroccan, and Arabic culture. And that’s ur abridged history lesson for today 👩🏫👍 #musicmap#worldmusic

Didn’t post about it much cuz it was mostly a family thing but on Wednesday I lost an uncle to cancer, and then yesterday MCYt lost Technoblade to cancer as well and its all just hitting very close to home rn.
